FUNAAB school loaded with cannabis intercepted by Customs

The Ogun State Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service, says it has intercepted a Toyota Coaster bus laden with neatly concealed wraps of Indian hemp, along Imeko Afon area of the Idiroko border.

The bus reportedly belongs to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

The Controller of the command, Sani Madugu, disclosed the seizure on Tuesday at the command's headquarters in Abeokuta, adding that the driver of the vehicle, Abolade Bolaji, had been arrested.

He said customs operatives, who were on patrol on Saturday, August 12, intercepted the vehicle and subsequently apprehended the driver of the bus with number plate, FUNAAB 50 B-100 FG.

Madugu said 211 parcels of cannabis were discovered in the bus.

Madugu, who was accompanied by the state Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Bala Fagge, said, "The suspect, Abolade Bolaji, was caught in the Imeko border town while conveying the illegal drug into the country.

"He concealed parcels of Indian hemp (cannabis) under the bags of rice he was conveying with the vehicle to Abeokuta, when nemesis caught up with him.

"Our operatives on patrol stopped the vehicle and searched it, only to discover the illicit drug."

Madugu later handed over the narcotic to the NDLEA for further investigation.

Fagge, while receiving both the suspect and the exhibits, commended the NCS for the feat.

He noted that Indian hemp was now being cultivated in neighbouring countries, with market in Nigeria, adding that the cannabis recovered from the suspect weighed 295 kilorammes.

Reacting to the interception of the school bus, FUNAAB said it would not interfere in the investigation of the matter, describing it as unfortunate.

The institution's Head of the Public Relations Directorate, Mrs. Emi Alawode, in a statement, said as a law abiding institution, necessary machinery had been put in place to carry out thorough investigation of the incident.

The statement read in part, "The attention of the university has been drawn to an unfortunate incident that was said to have occurred on Saturday, August 12, 2017, in which one of its drivers, using the university's official vehicle in his possession, was said to have been apprehended along Olorunda, Ogun State, by law enforcement agents, for allegedly being in possession of substances suspected to have been smuggled.

"Already, the university has put the necessary machinery in place to carry out proper investigations to ascertain what actually transpired on the said date on one hand, while law enforcement agents on the other hand would be allowed and supported to perform their statutory duties in the overall interest of all citizens."

The Nigerian Air Force has sentenced to death by hanging Airman Kalu Bernard, for killing his lover, Solape Oladipupo, aka Shomzy Shomzy, on March 12, 2017.

The judgment, which started 9am on Tuesday, dragged till 4pm when it was stood down before the panellists reconvened at 7.30pm.

Reading out the 70-page  court findings, which lasted for about two hours, the Judge Advocate, Flight Lieutenant M.A. Umoh, listed the eight-count charges against 21-year-old Kalu to include murder, house breaking, impersonation, attempted murder, among others.

The defence counsel, Abimiku Ewuga, urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying the accused was his family breadwinner.

The President of the court, Gp. Capt. Elisha Bindul, who found the accused guilty in six out of the eight counts, sentenced him to death by hanging, subject to the confirmation of the conveying authority.

Ewuga later told reporters that he would appeal the judgement.

Kalu had on March 12, 2017, killed Oladipupo at her Corporal and Below Quarters, Compound 9, Air Force Base, Makurdi, on the suspicion that she was in a love relationship with another man.

Driver invites gang members to kidnap his bosses, collects N4m ransom

A driver, Yinka Adebanjo, has confessed to orchestrating the kidnap of his bosses at Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Adebanjo, aka Esho, was a driver at Mateco Industry West Africa Limited, where the victims, Jamie Larcar and Mario Maglundo (Filipinos) worked.

Adebanjo connived with an herbalist, Ishau Awokoya, and one Seun Ogunjobi, to abduct the expatriates. Members of the 7-man gang, had pretended to be vigilantes guarding some Ikorodu communities against members of the dreaded Badoo cult.

They reportedly laid in ambush for the Filipinos, who were in a Jeep driven by Adebanjo. The compromised driver was 'ordered' to disembark from the vehicle as one of his accomplices took over the steering and drove away the victims.

"They took the victims to the herbalist's house in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, on July 5, 2017, and kept them for 9 days. The victims were released after collecting the sum of N4m as ransom.

Following their release, a team of the Anti-kidnapping unit of the state police command tracked down the driver to Ikotun, Lagos. He was said to have led the detectives to arrest the herbalist and Ogunjobi.

The suspects were paraded by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni. Charms and other ritual paraphernalia recovered from the suspects were also displayed.

Adebanjo confessed to providing information that led to the abduction of his bosses, adding that he got N400,000 from the N4m ransom.
