See why Evans is yet to be arraigned in court

Two weeks after the arrest of a notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans, the police have yet to determine when the suspect will be arraigned in court.

This is just as the Lagos State Police Command said it was not aware of any other media interview with Evans since he was paraded on June 11.

Punch reports that the 36-year-old was apprehended on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

He also revealed his involvement in drug trafficking and robberies.

Six of his gang members were also paraded.

A Lance Corporal, Victor Chukwunonso, attached to the Nigeria Army Band Corps, Abatti Barracks, Surulere, Lagos State, had also been arrested by the police for allegedly belonging to the kidnappers' gang.

However, the police said they were still taking an inventory of Evan's criminal activities.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, on Monday, stated that he would be arraigned after investigations.

He directed our correspondent to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Moshood Jimoh, for details on the arraignment date.

He said, "After investigations, the Inspector-General of Police will give directive onwhat to do.

"There are some other pieces of information about the suspect that must be known to us about things that happened years ago. We have to update all of them in our record. You can call the FPRO for other necessary information."

Famous-Cole also said the command had not presented Evans to the media for interview since the June 11 parade, adding that the police were not aware of other purported interviews with him.

"Journalists interviewed him during the parade led by the FPRO. Information being put out now probably came from the parade on that day. I am not aware of any other parade."

The FPRO did not pick calls and had yet to reply to a text message sent to him as of press time.

If you're not happy with your president, vote him out - Ooni to Nigerians

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has told Nigerians to vote out their president, if they are not happy with his administration and retain him if they are pleased with him.

He stated this in an interview aired on The Osasu Show.

The monarch said that the electorates have not realized the power they have and urged them to be organized.

Dailypost reports that when asked what government must do to better the lot of the Nigerian youth, the Ooni replied:

"Why must it be government, government? Who is government? It is the people that are behind the government.

"If you are not happy with your president, you go for another election, and you will vote your president out. If you are happy with your president, you will continue with that government for them to be in power.

"Truth be told, we Nigerians don't know our power yet. We don't know our voting power, yet. Until we know it, we won't stop complaining, especially the youth. Once we know it, we won't complain again.

"My school of thought is let us, first of all, organise ourselves and let us talk positively about this country. Let us stop derogatory, hate speeches. Things that will continue to divide everybody further."

Akinwunmi Adesina wins Nobel Prize

The World Food Prize Foundation has bestowed on Akinwumi Adesina, the former minister of agriculture the $250,000 2017 World Food Prize Laureate prize on Monday.

The President of the Foundation, Kenneth Quinn, said Mr. Adesina won the prize "for driving change in African agriculture for over 25 years and improving food security for millions across the continent".

Mr. Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, was announced on Monday as the 2017 World Food Prize Laureate at a ceremony at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Quinn explained that the selection of Nigeria's former Minister of Agriculture for the prize also "reflected both his breakthrough achievements as Minister of Agriculture of Nigeria".

He said Mr. Adesina "led a major expansion of commercial bank lending to farmers as Vice President of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and as Minister of Agriculture in Nigeria, introduced the E-Wallet system".

Mr. Adesina also "introduced initiatives to exponentially increase the availability of credit for smallholder farmers across the African continent and galvanized the political will to transform African agriculture," he said.

He said Mr. Adesina "grew up in poverty himself" and embarked on a journey to use his academic training to "lift up millions of people out of poverty, especially farmers in rural Africa".

He explained that "as Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture from 2011 to 2015, Adesina successfully transformed his country's agriculture sector through bold reforms".

Mr. Quinn said the bold reforms included creating programmes to make Nigeria self-sufficient in rice production, and to make cassava become a major cash crop.

He pointed out that in 2006, as Associate Director for Food Security at the Rockefeller Foundation, Mr. Adesina played a critical leadership role in organising the Africa Fertilizer Summit in Abuja.

He said the summit was described as absolutely essential in igniting the campaign to spread a new Green Revolution across Africa, which led to the creation of AGRA.

"Our Laureate next played a leadership role in the development of AGRA, during which he led the effort to exponentially expand commercial credit for the agricultural sector and for farmers across the continent.

"And then, as Minister of Agriculture of his home country Nigeria, our Laureate introduced the E-Wallet system which broke the back of the corrupt elements that had controlled the fertilizer distribution system for 40 years.

"The reforms he implemented increased food production by 21 million metric tonnes and attracted 5.6 billion dollars in private sector investments, thus earning him the reputation as the 'Farmer's Minister'."

Mr. Quinn said as the first person from agriculture to ever lead a regional development bank, Adesina's receiving the Laureate Prize would give impetus in the coming decade to his profound vision.

Mr. Adesina is also the 46th person and the sixth African to win the World Food Prize.

Mr. Quinn commended Nigeria's representation at the event to announce the winner of the Laureate Prize, won by a distinguished Nigeria.

"I am so pleased that Chargรฉ d'Affaires Hakeem Balogun could be here for this announcement," he said.

A former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was also present at the occasion, as well as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, Congressmen, Ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps.

Mr. Adesina will be presented the $250,000 prize and Laureate sculpture at a ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol on October 19.

Obaseki orders employment of 4,200 youths

In line with his promise to create at least 200,000 jobs within 4 years, the Governor of Edo state, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has ordered the employment of 4,200 youths across the state under the Edo state public works programme from July 1st, this year.

In a statement endorsed by the governor's Chief of Staff, it was also revealed that Governor Obaseki had directed the engagement and training of 50 civil engineers to supervise the public works programme, and that the successful applicants were sourced from the database of unemployed youths developed by the government for the Edo Jobs initiative.

According to the Chief of Staff, "The new employed beneficiaries will work across the state on 45 inner roads selected under this special window. The governor also promised to engage another set of 4,200 in August 2017 under another window that will see the state government constructing and maintaining another set of 55 roads, culminating in almost 100 kilometres across the state."

He further enjoined the workers to be dedicated for the period of their engagement with the state government, as it would eventually amount to experience gathering and capacity building.

Meanwhile, to complement jobs originating from road construction, the state government also finalised arrangements to train young electrical and electronic engineers under a special arrangement with Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

The programme, it emerged, would build the capacity of young men and women on the practical side of electrical engineering in line with the 'Electrify Edo project', which kicked off with the signing of a power purchase agreement between the government and, at different times, Siemens AG and Ossiomo Power limited, few months ago.
